Arne Slot offers new Liverpool injury update for Man City with worrying admission

Liverpool take on Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday afternoon with the Reds set to be without a number of key defenders including Jeremie Frimpong against Pep Guardiola's men

Arne Slot has admitted that Liverpool 'don't have many defenders left', with Jeremie Frimpong set to miss this weekend's clash against Manchester City. The Reds welcome Pep Guardiola's side to Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Having dropped to sixth in the Premier League, Slot's side need a win to get their push for a top four spot back on track. But Liverpool head into the game in the grips of a defensive crisis.

Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni are currently out with long-term issues, while Slot expects Frimpong to be ruled out, having picked up a thigh injury in the Champions League win against Qarabag.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the Dutchman said: "Jeremie Frimpong not available for the weekend, Joe Gomez we have hope he can train Saturday, maybe available to help in the game because we don't have many defenders left."

Liverpool did manage to add to their defensive ranks in the January transfer window, with the Reds sealing a deal to sign Rennes' star Jeremy Jacquet, albeit that move will not become official until the summer.

Asked about that deal, Slot said: "Very pleasing because he is a very big talent and maybe even more than a talent but we speak cause of his age. We weren't the only ones interested in him so a big compliment to those who are signing the players.

"Another example of the model we use at this club: young, talented at the start of their careers, and can improve and help us for short and definitely long term. We have signed a lot of those recently and the mid to long-term future is in as very good place."

On his side's upcoming clash with City, Slot said: "I mainly remember the game we played there and outplayed for large parts in the first half, so this is another moment to see where we are in the development of this team.

"We know the importance of a result. It's the end phase of the season so results matter more and it's a very good team that beat Newcastle not even with their starters, so that tells you with the game we played against them what a force Man City still is and always will be."
