On Monday, the Government adopted a conclusion during a telephone session on taking over the organization of the reception for the bronze medal-winning handball players, in cooperation with the Croatian Handball Federation, which will be held on Monday, February 2, starting at 18 p.m., at Ban Josip Jelačić Square in Zagreb.
"Considering that the Croatian handball team won the bronze medal at the European Handball Championship in Denmark, Sweden and Norway, which is another excellent success of this generation of our handball players, the Government considers it necessary to organize an appropriate welcome for the handball players in Zagreb. Therefore, at this morning's telephone session, the Government adopted a Conclusion on taking over the organization of the welcome for the bronze-winning handball players, in cooperation with the Croatian Handball Federation. The welcome will be held on Monday, February 2, 2026, starting at 18 p.m., at Ban Josip Jelačić Square in Zagreb," the Government announced.
The government invites all fans and our fellow citizens to come to the central city square of the Croatian capital to greet the Croatian handball players and celebrate their success with them.
The statement emphasizes that this is an event of national character and significance, not exclusively local. When deciding on the organization of the reception, we particularly take into account the expectations and wishes of numerous fans and citizens who want to greet our handball players, which was clearly seen on the occasion of the reception on February 3, 2025, after winning the silver medal at the World Championship.
They remind us that this reception, exactly one year ago, was organized in cooperation with the Government, the City of Zagreb and the Croatian Handball Federation, and that it went smoothly, with respect for the wishes of Croatian handball players regarding the program and performers on stage.
"Since the city government initially began the process of organizing the reception without any consultation or agreement with the Government, and then canceled it, the Government has decided - in cooperation with the Croatian Handball Federation - to provide Croatian handball players and citizens with an appropriate celebration of another exceptional achievement of Croatian sport. The reception will be organized in accordance with the wishes of Croatian handball players, which is why citizens are coming to the reception," the Government concluded during a telephone session.
